Which providers offer broadband with free installation?

All of the major players – like BT, Virgin, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and the rest of the household names – tend to offer free installation with their broadband packages. Origin Broadband and Shell Energy Broadband, who are perhaps less familiar, also do. NOW Broadband only charge delivery fees with many of their packages.

It’s worth knowing however, that not all packages come with free installation and you may also find that certain providers only offer it in promotional periods. You will also often see broadband deals with free gifts offered during these promotions.

So, here’s our advice: while it’s tempting to avoid paying installation fees if you don’t need to, consider the package as a whole. Look at the contract term, connectivity speed and total contract cost, because you could well find a package which does charge installation fees that actually offers you a better deal overall. When you compare broadband deals with us, you can sort results by the total cost.

Can I get fibre optic broadband with free installation?

Yes, you can, but you may just find that your options are slightly more limited. ADSL broadband is still the most commonly available in the UK as it works through the copper wires of your phone line, so you’ll often find the most competitive deals for this type (though at the expense of such rapid speeds for all that content streaming!). If your heart is set on fibre optic, you can select this as a filter when you compare broadband packages and then sort results by those with free installation.

Is landline installation free for broadband?

Normally, you need a phone line in order to have access to broadband.  Yet with many of us now solely using mobile phones, having a landline installed isn’t necessarily the first thing we think about when we move to a new property. New builds, or indeed very old buildings, may therefore need a line installed; you could also find this is the case if you want two broadband connections in your home.

In most cases, having a phone line installed will cost you; this could be anywhere from £20 to £80, though it does of course depend on your chosen broadband package. Some postcodes will warrant free landline installation, but you’ll need to confirm this individually with your chosen provider.

Can I install broadband for free myself?

If you already have a phone line installed, you may well be able to set up your new router yourself. Each provider will have their own set of guidance but, on the whole, it should be a fairly streamlined process.

You’ll receive your router in the post before your contract starts. On the activation day, you simply need to connect your router to what’s called the master phone socket and plug in your router. As your router warms up, there could be a small waiting period as it comes online, although times will be particular to your chosen provider. Once it’s connected, you’re good to go!

Best broadband packages with free installation

Looking for a new broadband deal but want to skip the upfront costs? Take a look at some of the best internet packages we've found that don't charge any installation fees:

Direct Save Fast Broadband

If you're looking for a broadband package with no installation fees, you'll probably be interested in cutting costs elsewhere, too. This pacakge from Direct Save is one of the cheapest broadband deals around, with monthly costs below £20, and you'll struggle to find anything for less. However, with average download speeds of just 8Mbps, it's also one of the slowest broadband connections you can currently get, so we'd only recommend it to people who hardly go online at all.

Trooli Full Fibre 500

If you're after something a bit faster - a lot faster, in fact - then you may be tempted by this broadband package from Trooli. With ultrafast average download speeds of 500Mbps, and impressive upload speeds of 200Mbps, this connection should be more than enough for most types of household. It's also great value for money. However, Trooli is currently only available in select locations across the Southeast of England, so you'll be lucky to get your hands on this deal.

It's also widely available, but if you're looking for cheap monthly costs as well as free installation, then you may want to look elsewhere.
