About KCOM
Independent broadband provider KCOM, previously known as Kingston Communications, delivers high-speed internet solutions to homes and businesses across Hull and the surrounding area.
Thanks to some strange historical reasons, the city of Kingston-Upon-Hull is one of the only places in the UK not served by BT’s Openreach network. This means that KCOM has a near monopoly on internet services in the area – the only other alternatives are 4G or 5G home broadband, or some very small, local, and frankly unreliable providers.
Residents of Hull will be pleased to know, however, that KCOM offers a wide range of broadband packages to suit different households and budgets. In terms of download speeds, its packages start at a reasonable 30Mbps but go all the way up to an impressive 900Mbps.
That being said, KCOM’s deals are slightly more expensive than similar packages from other broadband providers, and this is probably due to it being the dominant provider in the area. But is it worth it? Let’s find out.
What does KCOM offer?
KCOM currently offers five levels of full fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband: Full Fibre Lite, Full Fibre 100, Full Fibre 300, Full Fibre 500, and Full Fibre 900.
All of these broadband deals come with line rental and pay as you go calls, although if you’re a new KCOM customer then you’ll be provided with a new landline number.
All of KCOM’s broadband contracts last for 18 months, while they also all command a one-off £24.99 installation fee.
Full Fibre Lite
This is KCOM’s basic, entry-level broadband package, providing average download speeds of 30Mbps and upload speeds of 5Mbps. While this is a full fibre connection that should suit most small households, you won’t be blown away by these speeds. If you want something a bit more reliable, consider one of the other packages.
It costs £29.99 a month, which although is KCOM’s cheapest price, is actually fairly expensive for these speeds. But then again, if you live in Hull then you’ve little other choice, so if you’re on a budget this may have to be for you.

Full Fibre 100
This is KCOM’s next best package, providing average download speeds of 100Mbps and upload speeds of 30Mbps. This provides a much more reliable connection than Full Fibre Lite does, and most small to medium-sized households should be more than satisfied with these speeds.
At £39.99 a month, however, it’s not cheap. That being said, it’s probably worth the extra £10 per month compared to the basic package, as both the download and upload speeds are vastly improved and you’ll notice the difference.

Full Fibre 300
According to KCOM’s website, this is the provider’s most popular broadband package. Offering average download speeds of 300Mbps, this is entering ultrafast territory. It also has impressive average upload speeds of 75Mbps – great for gamers and home office workers.
It costs £49.99 a month, which is a bit steep even for ultrafast speeds. But as we’ve mentioned previously, KCOM can get away with charging high monthly fees due to its monopoly on the local market. You may be able to get impressive internet speeds with a 4G or 5G home internet connection, but you’ll likely pay even more for these!

Full Fibre 500
Offering average download speeds of 500Mbps and upload speeds of 100Mbps, the Full Fibre 500 package offers a seriously fast and reliable connection. These sorts of speeds should be suitable for large families and households of multiple internet users.
Again though, this deal isn’t cheap, currently costing £59.99 per month. But if this is within your household’s budget, we would highly recommend this ultrafast plan.

Full Fibre 900
This is KCOM’s premium broadband deal, offering gigabit-capable speeds. With massive average download speeds of 900Mbps, as well as upload speeds of 180Mbps, this is for serious internet users. In fact, there’s not much you won’t be able to do online with this connection.
As expected for such a premium package, it’s not cheap. It will currently set you back £69.99 a month, but although this is a lot more expensive than your average broadband deal, it’s actually pretty good value compared to packages with similar speeds from other providers.

Can I get KCOM where I live?
As mentioned previously, KCOM serves the city of Hull and its surrounding areas. This also includes parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. If you live in Hull or nearby, pop your postcode into our broadband comparison tool to see which deals are available where you live.
Is KCOM any good?
As KCOM is a local broadband provider with relatively low numbers of customers compared to some of the bigger names, it isn’t yet included in Ofcom’s annual customer satisfaction reports. Therefore, it’s difficult to get an accurate reflection on its level of service.
However, it’s rated poor on Trustpilot with an average score of 2.5 stars, from 426 reviews (as of 01/12/21). Again, this isn’t a huge amount of customer reviews to go on, so we wouldn’t put too much faith into this rating as of yet.
