What is Sky Atlantic?

Sky Atlantic does exactly what it says on the tin. It's the channel you need for access to some of the finest content from across the Atlantic. HBO is the main contributor, with around half of all the programming being from that network. It's a great channel to keep up to date with the shows that the world's talking about, and thankfully it's ridiculously easy to get hold of on a wide range of devices and TV deals. Read on to find out what Sky Atlantic has to offer, and how to get involved.

How do I get Sky Atlantic?

Sky Atlantic is available to all Sky subscribers, and you can also access it through Now TV, which in turn can be accessed in app form on all sorts of devices! So there really is a whole host of ways to get your fix of American shows.

Sky Atlantic HD is available in the Sky HD bundle as standard too, so if you've got a flash new TV you'll be able to dig into some of the finest cinematography the US has to offer.

But what are the shows you can't miss?

The best Sky Atlantic TV shows

Sky Atlantic is the home of some incredible drama, here's our top picks from across the pond:

  • Lovecraft Country – The series that's currently taking the States by storm. This is a dark fantasy/horror, with lovecraftian themes, but set against the backdrop of Jim Crow era 50's America.Wild right?
  • Westworld – Now in its 3rd season, Westworld is the brainchild of Jonathan Nolan, brother of possibly today's most pre-eminent movie director, Christopher. While starting off apparently in the Wild West, Westworld weaves a rich tapestry of sci fi, adventure and dystopian themes.
  • Riviera – The twisted tale of an art dealer in the French Riviera, whose life is turned upside down following the death of her husband in a yacht accident. A glitzy and beautifully shot tale of intrigue.
  • Chernobyl – A dramatization of the 1968 nuclear plant disaster in Chernobyl. So much more than just a rehashing of the events, this miniseries is currently one of the highest rated TV shows of all time on IMDB.
  • Barry – A future classic dark comedy starring Bill Hader (Superbad, Tropic Thunder) as Barry Berkman, a lonely and disillusioned Hitman.
  • Game of Thrones – And an honorary mention for the biggest TV show of all time. While you won't get any new seasons; 2019 saw the dramatic culmination of 10 years of plot building, there's plenty of re-watch potential on Sky Atlantic, as well as a great selection of documentaries about this groundbreaking series.

It's important to remember there's no alternative to Sky Atlantic for the latest seasons of most HBO dramas, so bear this in mind when you compare TV deals, particularly if you're a big fan of those shows.

Can you access Sky Atlantic on Now TV?

Sky Atlantic is available through a Now TV entertainment pass, which is music to the ears of American drama fans, because it means you can access the channel on all sorts of devices which support the Now TV app.

This includes a whole range of smart TVs, Android devices, Iphones and Ipads with software more recent than iOS 8, most games consoles and, crucially, YouView+ boxes. This means you can access Now TV through the app if you're a BT TV or Talk Talk TV user!

Can you access Sky Atlantic on Virgin Media?

Unfortunately, Virgin Media is one of the only TV deals you won't be able to access Sky Atlantic through. Virgin haven't been able to come to a deal with Sky regarding the channel, and their boxes don't support the Now TV app. This means that you won't be able to access the channel on your TV.

However, there's nothing stopping you using the Now TV app on another device, like a laptop or tablet, to get hold of all that juicy American content.
