Broadband from
SSE

About SSE

Scottish and southern Electric (SSE), the renowned provider of UK Gas and Electric, have recently jumped on the affordable broadband bandwagon. In addition to offering competitive prices for Gas and Electrical services, customers can now choose from a range of low to high broadband speeds and a variety of inclusive phone options.

It is worth noting that existing energy customers pay £5 less for their phone and broadband packages, and unlike other major providers, there are no TV or mobile phone packages available.

What broadband speeds does SSE provide?

SSE offers a range of broadband speed at great prices, starting from £21 per month. All contracts are 18-months long and early termination may mean having to pay for the remaining months of the contract. All broadband packages must be bought in conjunction with a phone plan due to line rental, and cannot be purchased independently.

What broadband packages does SSE offer?
17Mbps Everyday Broadband.

This is SSE’s lowest price broadband, at £21 per month. This is not a fibre optic broadband service, but is brought to the house using your existing cable phone line, known as ADSL. It is fine if you’re a household of 1-4 internet users (not all online at the same time), and can easily stream HD videos, but it is not suitable if you want to run a home office or have multiple users.

38Mbps Superfast Broadband

This is SSE’s standard fibre optic broadband service. As on all over providers on the BT Openreach* network (that is basically everyone except Virgin), this is the basic starter speed for fibre optic broadband. That is excluding BT themselves, whose entry level speed is 52.

This option is great for streaming multiple HD movies (or one UHD movie at a time) running a home office, and downloading lots of content at once. At £28 per month, this is still competitively priced,

76Mbps Superfast Broadband

This is SSE’s top streaming speed, and there’s basically nothing you can’t do at 76Mbps. It’s great for streaming multiple HD or UHD movies, running a home office, and allows of multiple busy users even during peak hours.

What is SSE’s Traffic Management like?

SSE’s traffic management policy prioritises time-sensitive activity, such as video calling and online gaming. This is in order to maintain performance at critical moments. Large file sharing (for example software updates and peer-to-peer file sharing) is throttled during peak times to allow better internet speeds where it is deemed more critical.

What is BT Openreach?

BT Openreach is a cross-network system of fibre optic cables, providing Superfast broadband to many homes across the UK. All major networks other than Virgin use the BT Openreach network, sharing fibre optic cables that run as far as the cabinet on your street. The so-called ‘last mile’ (the distance of wire between the cabinet and your house) is standard copper wire. For this reason, you cannot get broadband unless you also opt for a call plan and line rental.

What call plans does SSE offer?

SSE offers a range of inclusive call plans at highly competitive rates. The following Terms and Conditions apply to ALL of their plans.

Inclusive calls are standard voice calls, lasting up to 70 minutes, to local and national numbers, which are those numbers that begin with 01, 02 & 03. Calls to numbers beginning with 0845 & 0870, up to 70 minutes, are also free during the same inclusive periods of your call package for local and national calls. This excludes indirect access numbers and dial-up internet access.

Talk Weekend

This is SSE’s entry-level call plan, costing only £13.49 including line rental, making it one of the UK’s cheapest. Customers can enjoy up to 70 mins free call time over the whole weekend, after which PAYG rates apply.

Talk Evening and Weekend

This plan offers free inclusive evening and weekend calls (T&C apply). Unfortunately, the website does not specify what constitutes as “evening time”. This plan costs an extra £2 per month on top of the £16 per month line rental, costing a total of £17 per month.

Talk Anytime

This plan extends SSE customer’s inclusive phone usage to any time, for the additional cost of £5 on top of the £16 line rental, bringing the total cost to £21 per month. Ts&Cs apply.

Talk Anytime Plus

This gives customers all the use outlined in the Anytime plan, and extends it to include the following 20 foreign countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Portugal Madeira, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA and Vatican City.

Is there an installation fee?

Normally installation is free, unless you require a new phone line or need for an old one to be reactivated. This will incur an additional one-off upfront cost of £60.

With SSE, you can sign up for any of the following types of tariff:
