Big Bundle: Broadband

The Big Bundle comes with Virgin's M50 fibre broadband connection, which has an average download speed of 54Mbps.

This is a fine speed for small households, but if you've got a few users all streaming or downloading files at once, it might start to strain. A full HD film will take 4-9 minutes to download on a 54Mbps connection.

According to Ofcom, most users do get the speeds advertised on the M50 package - the average speed actually received is 53Mbps. Source: Ofcom Nov 2020.

If you are concerned that 54Mbps might not quite cut it, the next package up (Big Bundle + Drama & Docs) comes with M100 Fibre Broadband with an average 108Mbps download speed.

Which TV channels come with the Big Bundle?

You'll only get Virgin's basic Mixit TV package with the Big Bundle. This gives you 105 channels, but nothing of note outside of what you'd get with a standard Freeview box.

With the Drama & Docs add-on, you'll get more premium entertainment channels like Sky One and Comedy Central, as well as the History Channel and other education channels. You'll need to upgrade to the Bigger Bundle to get Sports channels.

The Big Bundle isn't worth choosing for the TV channels alone. In fact you could get faster internet from Virgin, and more or less the same channels with any smart TV or Freeview set top box, for less money overall.

Virgin TV 360 box

The Virgin 360 set top box that you get as standard with any of their TV packages is a good bit of kit. It's certainly at the top end of set top boxes, with 4K Ultra HD output as standard, streaming apps included, and voice control functionality.

However, it's not necessarily worth taking out a subscription for alone, which is what you'd be doing with the base level Big Bundle.

Landline

You get a landline with unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines and Virgin Mobile numbers included with the Big Bundle. Whether or not this is useful to you will depend on your habits.

This weekend call packages comes as standard on every Virgin Broadband bundle, and it isn't until you get to the top tier Ultimate Volt package that unlimited anytime calls are included.

Price: Is it worth it?

The Big Bundle is Virgin's cheapest bundle deal, and currently costs £33 a month for 18 months, with a £35 set up fee.

For comparison, you can get Virgin's M100 Fibre Broadband on its own for £28 a month, or you can upgrade to the Big Bundle + Drama & Docs for £37.99. The lacklustre TV channel selection that comes with the Big Bundle means you're probably getting better value going for one of these alternatives.
