What broadband speeds do you get with the Virgin Media Mega Volt bundle?

The Mega Volt bundle includes Virgin's Gig1 fibre optic broadband. With an average download speed of 1,130Mbps, will handle pretty much anything you can throw at it.

At these speeds, an HD film will download in around 15 seconds, and a 10GB video game update will take just over a minute. A large household with several people streaming HD films separately will be able to do so without interruption or a noticeable slowdown.

What of the average upload speed? On the Gig1 connection, it is just 52Mbps, which unfortunately isn't far off the norm for ultrafast connections. That said, not many broadband providers offer fully symmetrical lines with matching download and upload speeds.

The question really isn't whether or not the Ultimate Volt Bundle's ultrafast broadband is fast enough, but whether it's too fast. Most users will rarely need speeds higher than 100Mbps, and would generally save a bit of money by downgrading slightly from the Gig1 speeds.

It's worth noting that because Gigabit broadband is the fastest and newest type of connection available on the market, not every postcode in the country has access to it.

Which TV channels are included in this package?

The Mega Volt bundle comes with every channel Virgin TV offers. If your TV can handle it, you'll be able to watch Virgin TV and BT Sport in crystal-clear 4K Ultra HD.

In Virgin TV speak, this means you get the 'Maxit TV' base package, which comes with 230+ TV channels including Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, Comedy Central HD, Nickelodeon, and all free-to-view channels. The only one missing is Sky Atlantic, which is only available through Sky or BT.

To get similar TV coverage on the next package down (the Biggest Combo Bundle), you'd actually be paying just £15 less than you would for the Mega Volt bundle, with 20 fewer TV channels, half the internet speeds, a more limited landline calls package, and no mobile SIM.

Virgin Media Mega Volt bundle: Phone services

The Virgin Media Mega Volt bundle is truly all-in-one. For those looking for a broadband and phone package, it comes with a landline and SIM card to cover your home phone and mobile phone needs. 

Landline

While most of us don't use a landline any more, the Ultimate Mega Volt bundle includes one with unlimited calls to any UK number.

This might seem frivolous if you're not going to use it, but even without it, the price of the package is pretty good considering what else you get.

Mobile phone

One of the biggest selling points of the Mega Volt package is the mobile SIM that's thrown in, courtesy of Virgin Media's partnership with O2. The O2 SIM comes with unlimited data, minutes and texts, and 5G capability should you need it.

Since a SIM-only contract with the same allowance would set you back somewhere in the region of £20 a month from a standard mobile network, getting it as part of your broadband tariff is pretty good.

The one issue is that it is quite unlikely this new broadband tariff lines up perfectly with the end of your current mobile tariff. Even if it is a good deal, you probably don't need two mobile tariffs at once. 

If you've only got a few months left on your mobile plan though, it might be worth letting them overlap for a bit before switching to the O2 SIM and cutting out your monthly phone bill.

Is the Mega Volt bundle worth it?

At £79.99 a month with no upfront costs, the Mega Volt bundle is not cheap. However, considering everything you get for that money, we think it's a pretty good deal.

To get similarly fast broadband from another provider, you'd be looking at around £40-£50 a month. 

On top of that, some providers will charge you upwards of £30 a month for Sky channels alone. Add on a Netflix subscription, unlimited landline calls, and an unlimited SIM card, and you're very much getting your money's worth with the Mega Volt bundle. 

That said, not everyone needs Gigabit broadband; it's best reserved for larger household, gamers and streamers. Most households will be more than fine with superfast fibre broadband, with speeds ranging from 100Mbps to 300Mbps.

The price of this package also increases every year, so at the end of your two-year contract, you'll be paying over £90.  So unless you really want top speeds and have the budget for all the bells and whistles, you might want to consider other broadband and TV packages.
