In this
guide:

How do I get started?

First, you need to find your electricity and gas supply numbers. These numbers are unique to you and are simply used to find out where you are using your energy from.

Your electricity supply number is called your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN). It is available from your current supplier, or if you are installing a new connection you can request an MPAN from your local Distribution Network Operator.

Your gas supply number is called your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN). This can be found on your gas bill.

If you need more help from us or you don’t have a bill to hand, contact us on 0800 802 1623, and we can tell you who is currently supplying the energy to your business. At the same time, we can compare business energy deals to find out if there is a cheaper option for you and make sure you are getting the most out of your business energy deal.

What type of meter does my business need?

Read the descriptions below to find out which meter will benefit your business the best:

Standard meters

If you have a standard meter, you have to take readings yourself and submit them to your supplier. There is a single price for each unit of energy so pricing is simple. To ensure that your bill is accurate, you need to send in readings regularly, around once a month.

Smart meters

The government have planned to ensure the majority of properties in the UK have smart meters installed by 2020. Smart meters send information about your energy usage and billing straight to your supplier. This means you don’t have to take your own meter readings and you know your bill will always be accurate. No hassle. You can keep track of your usage at home so you can monitor your spending.

Economy 7 meters

These meters have lower tariffs for electricity used at night rather than in the day. Note that the rate during the daytime can change and will be higher during peak hours of the day.

The night-time period during which you pay cheaper rates is for a set seven-hour period. The time of this seven-hour period depends on where you live and who your energy supplier is.

Economy 10 meters

These meters work in the same way as the Economy 7 meters, but the period over which your electricity tariff is lower is ten hours rather than seven. This means your business can reduce their spending overnight when you are likely to have low energy consumption.

Does your business run mostly at nights or on the weekends? There are more options:

Evening and Weekend meter

This is a 2-rate meter that provides a lower tariff at the weekend, so you can reduce your spending if you use extra power on Saturdays and Sundays.

Evening, Weekend and Night meter

This is a 3-rate meter which provides a lower tariff for weekends and evenings and an even lower tariff for overnight use. There is a pricier tariff for daytime usage but if your business is open mostly at night or on the weekends then this meter can reduce your energy spending significantly.

In a similar way to the Economy 7 and Economy 10 meters, the hours in which the cheaper rates apply over the weekend and at night will vary between suppliers and your area.

How much is my meter going to cost?

Possibly nothing! If your business chooses to install a smart meter then it will be absolutely free. If you have chosen a different option then there may be a fee for the installation but whatever the cost, we can help you to get a fair price from your supplier. Simply contact us and let us know if you need a hand.

When can I get my meter?

The next step is to arrange your installation appointment. The supplier will need to decide the work involved to install the meter for your business and then you can arrange a suitable time for this to be done.

The waiting time will vary between supplier but it should take between two and three weeks for your meter to be installed. It is important to note that if a meter is being installed on your property for the first time then new connections have to be made and the waiting time can increase to up to twelve weeks.

Make sure you arrange the appointment as early as possible.

What if a meter has never been installed at my premises before?

In this case, there are a few extra steps you need to do. Before you choose the type of meter you want, your business needs to:

Arrange a new connection

Contact your local Distribution Network Operator and organise a time for them to set up the new connection. There will be a fee for this but the price varies depending on your area and how much electricity you will need.
