Not sure who your supplier is? Don’t worry, there are a number of ways of finding out so that you can have any issues resolved and start looking for the best energy deals elsewhere.

The easiest way to find out details about your gas or electricity supplier is by looking at your recent energy bills. If you don’t have your bill available or you have recently moved to a new house, you can find information about your supplier by using the methods listed below:

Finding Your Gas Supplier

Use the Find My Supplier online service or alternatively call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524 (Calls will cost 7p per minute plus your network charges).

These services will require you to give them your MPRN or ‘Meter Point Reference Number’, which is unique to your property. The services will help you find the number which will be located somewhere on your meter.

Finding Your Electricity Supplier

Do this by either using the Energy Networks Association postcode search tool or call your regional electricity distribution telephone number. You can find the number for all British regions listed online.

I’ve Just Moved House… How Do I Find Out About My Suppliers?

If you’ve just moved home, the easiest way to find out who your supplier is to ask the landlord, estate agent, or the previous tenants of the property.

The previous tenants should have told the gas or electricity supplier that they were scheduled to move, meaning that the suppliers should send you a letter addressed to ‘The Occupier’. This letter should provide you with all the details about the supplier that you will require.

For those that have been living in the property for a while, it may not be worth hassling the previous tenants or the estate agent who sold the property. In this case it is best to follow the steps previously listed in this guide (see above).

So, I Know Who My Suppliers Are… What Now?

The first thing to do should be looking around for the best energy deals on the market. For most people, especially those that have just moved property, it is very likely that your supplier has put you on a standard variable rate tariff and thus you will be paying well over what is necessary for your gas and electricity.

Switching energy suppliers online is very straightforward and only takes a few minutes to do. The switch can also be done over the phone - this can also be handy as you can ask questions you may have about the switch and get a precise answer.

Energy comparison websites like usave should be used to find you the best bargain.
