Important info

Bulb Energy went into administration in November 2021, and its customers were transferred over to Octopus Energy in December 2022.

Summary

Before going into administration, Bulb Energy was probably regarded as one of the best independent energy suppliers out there. It started off as a small supplier but rapidly grew to become a force to be reckoned with. Some of the top reasons why Bulb was so popular included:

  • It was one of the top ranked energy suppliers in terms of customer service, value for money, and digital tools.
  • You got a smart meter with your energy plan which made it easier to manage your energy usage and bills.
  • You got a Warm Home Discount and other deals if you were a Bulb Energy User.
  • Bulb Energy’s Referral Scheme was a good way to save on energy bills and get rewards.

Who is Bulb energy?

Founded by Hayden Wood and Amit Gudka in 2015, this relatively young energy supplier was one of the fastest growing independent energy companies in the UK. Although it was not the only supplier promising renewable energy deals, it was definitely more affordable than most other suppliers who offer purely renewable energy, which made it popular among consumers. In the last couple years before collapsing, Bulb Energy had gone from supplying 15,000 homes to almost 1.6 million homes. It had won multiple accolades for customer excellence.

What type of energy does Bulb supply?

One of the most unique things about Bulb Energy was that it offered only one tariff. This made it particularly appealing to switch to, because you did not need to compare multiple tariffs from a single supplier.

The tariff was easy to understand, with no hidden charges or exit fees. It was a variable tariff that charged gas and electricity as per your usage, as well as the type of meter you own. It also offered an Economy 7 option for customers who pay by direct debit.

Customers could enjoy 100% renewable energy at a fraction of the price that it would have been with bigger suppliers.

What are Bulb Energy's customer reviews like?

Bulb Energy came in third out of 35 suppliers in the Which? annual customer survey of energy suppliers. It enjoyed a fantastic reputation when it comes to bill accuracy and complaint management, where it scored a complete score of five out of five stars. It likewise enjoyed an excellent reputation on Trustpilot, with a rating of 4.7 out of 5, based on 63,418 reviews.
