  • A11 processor
  • Glass body
  • Water and dust resistant
  • Wireless charging

Highlights

  • The iPhone 8 has a very similar design to the iPhone 7, but sports a sleeker glass body instead of the iPhone 7’s aluminium casing.
  • It also has the most durable glass ever used in a smartphone (at the time) with an IP67 water and dust resistance rating thanks to its reinforced steel and aluminium structure.
  • The glass body also allows the iPhone 8 to be charged wirelessly, with support for ‘fast charging’ with the correct accessories.

Design & Appearance

The dimensions of the iPhone 8 are 138.4mm x 67.3mm x 73mm and it weighs in at 148 grams. It comes in three main colours, silver, gold, and space grey, and there is a special (PRODUCT)RED Edition which is red.

Camera

The iPhone 8 has a 12-megapixel wide-angle f/1.8 camera on the back, with a larger and faster sensor than its predecessors. It also has better colour saturation thanks to an updated colour filter with deeper pixels, and produces images and videos with much lower noise.

On the front, it has a 7-megapixel f/2.2 FaceTime HD camera which is great for video calling and selfies. The camera has image stabilisation, Retina Flash, and 1080p video recording too.

Display

The iPhone 8 comes with a 4.7inch LCD display which has a resolution of 1334x750 and a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. The iPhone 8 features True Tone, which utilises the ambient light sensor to adjust colour temperature and intensity to the optimum levels for viewing in your surroundings.

True Tone also enhances your reading experience on the iPhone 8 by making the display seem more paper-like for less strain on your eyes.

Software & Features

The iPhone 8 is updatable to the latest version of iOS, and benefits from software design that can better predict power needs so that battery performance can be maximised.

It is also capable of ‘fast charging’, which allows it to achieve 50% battery capacity in just half an hour of being plugged in. This feature does require one of Apple’s specialist USB-C power adapters, however.

Performance

The iPhone 8 comes with a six-core A11 Bionic chip which contains two performance cores that are 25% faster than the A10 Fusion chip, and four efficiency cores that are 70% faster. All six of the cores can be utilised simultaneously for multi-threaded workloads.

The 3-core GPU is 30% faster than the previous iteration, and its Neural Engine makes machine learning tasks much faster than before.
