Highlights

  • The iPhone XS comes with a super-sharp OLED display which has the highest pixel density of any Apple phone. Apple also claims the iPhone XS has improved scratch resistance, and is made from the most durable glass ever used in a smartphone.
  • The iPhone XS also features an improved IP68 water resistance rating to protect against accidental spills and splashes.
  • The iPhone X only came in silver and space grey finishes, but the iPhone XS also comes in gold.

Design & Appearance

The design of the iPhone XS is essentially the same as the previous generation’s iPhone X, with an edge-to-edge display on one side, a back made entirely of glass on the other side, with a polished steel frame separating the two.

The iPhone XS measures 143.6mm x 70.9mm x 7.7mm. Weighing in at 177 grams, the iPhone XS is slightly heavier than the iPhone X.

The iPhone XS comes in space grey, silver, and gold.

Camera

The iPhone XS has a 7MP front-facing camera that powers its Face ID and TrueDepth features. The camera also supports Smart HDR for more detailed shadows and highlights in portraits, and a new Depth Control feature that allows you to adjust the blur in an image after it is captured.

The rear camera is the same as is found on the iPhone X: an f/1.8 12MP wide-angle lens and an f/2.4 12MP telephoto lens. Both lenses have wide colour support and optical image stabilisation.

Display

The iPhone XS features the same display as the iPhone X: a ‘Super Retina’ OLED HDR display. This display supports a wide colour gamut and features deeper blacks and true-to-life colours thanks to Apple’s True Tone technology.

The display has a 1,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio, a maximum brightness of 625 cd/m2 and also supports Dolby Vision.

Software & Features

The iPhone XS is capable of fast-charging with a USB-C adapter that exceeds 18W. This allows it to reach 50% battery life in just 30 minutes of charging. Wireless charging is also supported on the iPhone XS thanks to its glass body. It can be charged wirelessly with any Qi-certified inductive charger.

Performance

The iPhone XS comes with a 7-nanometer A12 Bionic chip. The A12 Bionic is much faster and more efficient than the A11 chip found in the iPhone X.

In comparison to the A11 Bionic, the A12’s two performance cores are up to 15% faster, and its four efficiency cores use up to 50% less power.

The A12, like the A11, can utilise all six of its cores simultaneously, and the updated performance controller allocates the work across the cores to get the best performance and battery life.
