How does Roam Like Home work?

If you’re on one of Virgin Mobile’s 4G plans, you’ll even automatically be connected to a 4G network (if there is one available).

Remember, our fair usage policy applies when you use your Virgin Mobile abroad.

Can I use Roam Like Home outside of the EU?

Roam Like Home does not apply to countries outside of the EU, so you’ll be charged according to the country you are visiting. It’s best to check the rates before you leave, as these can vary from one destination to the next.

You can use Virgin Mobile’s tool here to check the rates for the country you are visiting.

What if I have a purple SIM?

If you have a purple SIM there are a few non-EU destinations in which you cannot use Virgin Mobile to keep connected. These countries are: Ethiopia, Falkland Islands, Guam, Guyana, Namibia, Northern Mariana Islands, Paraguay, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Swaziland, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Vanuatu and Venezuela.

The following countries were also added to this list on 1st September 2020: Brunei Darussalam, Lesotho, New Caledonia and Zimbabwe.

How do calls and texts work abroad?

Within the EU things are straightforward: you can use your UK allowance to make calls, send texts, and even use data. This is all subject to Virgin Mobile’s fair use policy.

Outside the EU, you will be charged for calls that you make, calls that you receive, and messages that you send. Rates differ from one country to the next, so check the rates before you leave.

Your friends and family in the UK who call or text you will be charged the standard UK rate.

How does voicemail work when I’m abroad?

Listening to a voicemail in an EU destination will cost the same as it would in the UK.

You will be charged for listening to voicemail messages outside of the EU. The rate varies from one region to another. You can check the rates here.

How does mobile data work?

You can use your UK data allowance with Roam Like Home when you travel within the EU (subject to fair usage).

Outside of the EU, you will be charged per megabyte of data used. The fee charged depends on the region you are in.

Virgin Mobile caps your data usage when you’re abroad so you don’t have any nasty surprises when you get your monthly bill. They’ll send you a text when you've reached 80% of the cap.

More information about using data when roaming abroad can be found here.
