BT Joins Virgin in Offering Broadband Deals for University Students

BT has joined Virgin Media in launching a summer line of superfast broadband tariffs for university students, with nine-month, term-time contracts, free access to the BT Sport App, and competitive pricing.

BT is offering its Superfast Fibre Unlimited package with average download speeds of 50 Mbps for £35 per month for students, slightly cheaper than the £35.99 the package usually costs. The Superfast Fibre Unlimited 2 package, with average speeds of 67 Mbps, comes at a steeper discount: £40 per month, compared to the usual £45.99. All prices include line rental.

BT’s fibre speeds should be enough for a crowded household of binge-watchers, gamers, and occasionally studiers

A nine-month contract could spare students from paying for a summer’s worth of internet for a house they’ve ditched for Thailand, Ibiza, or their parents’ home. However, if you do decide to stay in your student housing over the summer, it appears prices on BT’s student tariffs won’t rise in the 10th month.

The contracts come with nine months of free access to the BT Sport App. If you get hooked, the service will cost £9 per month after the contract term expires. ‘

Students will face higher setup charges for the tariffs, however: £44.99 for activation of the services and delivery of the ‘free’ router. Other superfast fibre products from BT currently come with upfront costs of just £9.99.

These BT broadband deals are available exclusively to university students. Customers will need a university email to sign up.

Virgin this year has ditched its nine-month, term-time contracts in favour of offering students 30-day, rolling contracts and at the same monthly rate as their standard 12-month contracts. Students can take advantage of Virgin’s speedy cable connections for as little as £33 per month and access its Vivid 350 package—with 362 Mbps average download speeds, the fastest widely available domestic broadband package in the UK—for £48. Setup charges start at £20.

However, a rolling contract will renew automatically each month, so students will have to remember to cancel their Virgin broadband with enough notice in the spring, or face bills for an additional month.

Virgin cable connection are only available to just under half of all UK customers. Use a broadband availability checker to make sure your student house is one of them before forwarding the deal to your future housemates. BT’s connections are more widely available.
