If you’re like pretty much everyone else you will own a laptop. But with a massive range of choices out there it can be difficult to decide which one will be the right one for you.

Whether you’re going to be vanquishing foes online or travelling around the world there is a laptop that’s right for you. We have put together a quick guide to help you choose the right one, depending on what kind of user you are.

Best laptops for students

As a student, you will most likely be needing a cost-effective laptop that will generally just be used for writing essays and getting on the internet. One good option is the Lenovo idea pad 110 with a 15.6 inch screen, coming in at a very reasonable £279.99. It will be able to do everything you need, and the generous screen size can be a good substitute for a TV, if you don’t already have one in your house.

£279.99 might seem like a bit much however, and you may still need something a bit cheaper. For basic use, the ASUS E200HA could be the answer to your dreams. It will be able to run Microsoft Word and get on the internet, essentially all you’ll need for basic use, but at only 2 GB of ram you may struggle to do anything too demanding. At just under 12 inches you won’t be getting your friends round to watch a movie on it, but its lightweight design makes it easy to take to and from lectures.

Best laptops for gamers

Most laptops will be suitable for your casual gamer, however if you’re going to be playing a lot of open world MMORPG’s or other games that require high specs, you may need to invest. Some gaming laptops are good general all-rounders that will have these specifications and won’t cost to much more than a normal laptop. For example, the Dell Inspirion 15 gaming laptop has all the things you need for gaming, 8 GB of Ram, 126 GB of storage and a graphics card that will support 99% of games out there. Coming in at £749.95 it’s a little pricey but not completely out of the question.

If you’re a very serious gamer however you might want to consider something with a bit more firepower. The Apache Pro Ge62VR is a serious gaming laptop, boasting 16GB of RAM, a Terabyte of data storage, and a state of art graphics card. This laptop supports multiple games at the same time as well as virtual reality and coming in at £1299 this is one for those who take their games seriously.

Best laptops for travellers

If your planning on going travelling, you may want to bring a laptop, whether it’s to chat to friends at home or to keep a journal of your voyages that you update while hopping between hostel broadband connections. Specifications will vary, but there a few things that will always be needed, namely a good battery life and a laptop that is easily portable. For basic use, the Acer Aspire Chromebook will be good option. Costing between £150-£250 they are ideal for someone who might be on a bit of a budget and at just over 1KG they are lightweight and affordable. They don’t run a full operating system and won’t be able to offer applications like office or photoshop, but for simple usage it will do nicely.

If you’re a seasoned traveller or someone who works while they are on the move you may need something a little higher end. Convertible laptops offer the flexibility of being able to be used as both a tablet and a laptop, there are certain situations where a laptop is a little unwieldy, say on a flight or a coach. When that’s the case you can simply fold it up and use it as a tablet. The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 for £815 is a great option, they have the processing power to handle most programmes you will need and can be used as Ebook or video player for those long journeys.
