Finding the right internet provider in your area

There are more than 150 internet providers currently operating in the UK. But rather than bore you with endless information about every company, we’ve just listed the biggest, most well-known and trusted companies here at usave.

You should also be aware that not all internet service providers operate in every part of the UK. For example, people living in rural areas will likely not have as wide a choice as those living in towns and cities. To see what ISPs are available where you live, simply enter your postcode into our broadband comparison tool above.

How do I choose an internet service provider?

To pick between the providers available that are available where you live, you should first work out your priorities. What do you value more, price or speed? Do you want an internet connection on its own, or are you looking for a TV package as well?

When you’re comparing broadband deals with usave, it’s worth playing around with the filters and ordering offers by price and speed, so you can get a good overview of what’s available to help you decide.

What to look for when looking at internet providers

Speed

Virgin Media is currently the most widely available superfast internet provider, offering average speeds of over 500Mbps on some packages thanks to its own network of fibre optic cables. Smaller companies like Hyperoptic also provide speeds of up to 1Gbps, but they only operate in limited areas. Read our guide on which provider has the fastest broadband to find out more.

Price

Basic ADSL broadband will often start at under £20 a month, and is regularly offered by providers like Plusnet, TalkTalk and the Post Office, among others. ISPs will often update their offering, so it’s hard to say which company is ultimately the best value for money.

Bundles

Sky is well known for its TV offerings and continues to provide a wide range of bundle packages which allow you to watch Sky Sports, Sky Cinema and all the rest. NOW Broadband, Virgin Media and BT also offer decent bundle options. Find out more with our guide on which provider offers the best TV bundles.

Customer Service

Customer service will vary between each provider, and as it’s likely you’ll need help or advice from your provider at some point during your contract, it’s something that's worth thinking about. According to Ofcom, Sky, Virgin Media and EE Broadband have all received above-average customer satisfaction scores in recent times. Read our guide on which providers offer the best customer service for more details.

Router

Often overlooked by most people, the type of router offered by your provider can make a big difference to having a reliable connection, especially if you live in a large house. Sky, BT and Virgin Media all offer high-end routers which come with nifty features and sleek design. For more info, have a look at our guide on which provider has the best router.

Rewards

Many providers will offer free gifts such as reward cards or cashback to try and grab your attention. BT are well known for their vouchers and reward cards, while Plusnet, TalkTalk and others often offer similar incentives.

Who is the best ISP?

Finding the perfect internet service provider for you and your household will depend on your specific needs and preferences. While some people see speed as the most important factor, other people may prioritise the overall price and value for money. Some people, for example students, may be more concerned about the contract length, while people who like to watch movies and sports will consider getting a bundle.
