About BT

With a history stretching back over 160 years, BT is the UK’s oldest and largest telecoms and internet provider.

Initially the only telecoms company in the country, it is now one of the ‘big four’ – which also includes Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media – providing internet, phone and TV services to more than 90% of UK customers. BT alone has more over 7.5 million loyal customers.

BT offers a wide range of broadband connection speeds, from ADSL, which uses traditional copper telephone lines, to superfast, ultrafast and full fibre broadband.

BT’s flagship Superfast Fibre broadband package brings in speeds of up to 67Mbps, and is available to a whopping 95% of properties across the UK. Some areas are eligible for ultrafast and full fibre packages too, which can provide properties with speeds of up to 100Mbps and 900Mbps respectively. Considering that in 2019 the average download speed for UK households was 64Mbps, this is seriously impressive stuff.

BT has recently also become known for its pay BT TV services, with its flagship BT Sport, which football lovers will know is the exclusive home of UEFA Champions League and Europa League football in the UK.

If you're a BT customer but you're unsatisfied with your current broadband service, check out our guide on how to cancel BT broadband.

BT broadband packages

To link up with BT broadband, most customers can use BT’s traditional copper wire phone lines, which allow for speeds of up to 17Mbps and download allowances that start at 10GB (up to unlimited).

BT’s trademark BT Infinity uses fibre optic broadband cables to provide a broadband speed of either 38Mbps or 76Mbps, with between 20GB and unlimited download allowances. This is not as widely available as the traditional phone line service; eligibility is subject to area. It is best to check BT’s website to see if you can access fibre optic cables.

BT’s Smart Hub is the latest advancement in their broadband technology. As the UK’s most powerful Wi-Fi signal provider, the Smart Hub can provide excellent signal strength in more places around the house than its competitors.

BT broadband deals are available as independent bundles.

BT broadband speeds

As a BT broadband customer, you are open to a wide range of broadband speeds. Measured in mega-bits-per-second (Mbps), this number determines how fast or slow your streaming and downloading will be. Due to infrastructure cost and accessibility, not all areas are eligible for all types, but let’s take a quick look at what is out there.

  • ADSL: This type of connection runs on the copper wires that connect landline phones to each other. The cable runs under the street, to an above-ground box, then onto your property. It’s the most commonly available and the cheapest, but also the slowest, meaning it’s not great if you’re a big household that loves to stream films and play games.
  • Fibre Broadband: Using fibre cables rather than copper, which are prone to break down over time, ISPs like BT are able to offer highly competitive broadband speeds. BT offers several different fibre packages, which differ in terms of average upload and download speed: Fibre Essential, Fibre 1, Fibre 2, Fibre 100, Fibre 250.
  • Full Fibre: This is like a normal Fibre package, but on steroids, providing households with speeds of up to 900Mb. It’s the UK’s most reliable broadband technology, and a real game changer.

For more detailed information on BT's fibre offerings and how they differ, see our BT fibre deals explained & compared page.

Benefits of a BT broadband package:

There are many benefits to getting a BT broadband package. Let’s take a quick look at the highlights.

Smart Hub

Exclusive to BT and available for free for all new BT Superfast Fibre customers, the Smart Hub router is an impressive piece of kit designed to give your household fast and reliable wireless internet connection.

Key features:

  • 7 carefully positioned antennae, ideally situated for optimum Wi-Fi performance
  • Smart channel selection, ensuring all devices in the home connect automatically to the fastest available Wi-Fi channel.
  • Smart scan feature, which constantly monitors the hub’s performance and reboots if it detects a problem.

If you sign up to BT Superfast Fibre with Complete Wifi or BT Ultrafast Fibre Plus, then you get the advanced Smart Hub 2. You can also purchase these hubs independently, for £129 (Smart Hub 1) and £200 (Smart Hub 2) plus postage.

Complete Wifi

Available to both new and existing BT customers for an additional £7 monthly cost, Complete Wifi uses the Smart Hub 2 together with additional Wi-Fi discs to guarantee strong signal in every room of the home.

Initially customers receive just one disc, which BT claims can increase speeds by 25% in the average 4-bedroom home. However if you still have “not spots”, BT will send up to two additional discs for free. So confident are they in the success of this tech, that if after three months you’re still not satisfied, you will be refunded £100.

Antivirus

Every single BT broadband deal comes with antivirus software as standard. Standard and Superfast broadband customers will get this protection for up to two devices, but Fibre with Halo 2 users can install it on up to 15 devices; ideal for a large family.

With BT Virus Protect, you get:

  • Personal firewall, to keep hackers away from your computer
  • Virus scan, to protect against spyware, adware, Trojans and other viruses
  • Site advisor, to alert you if the website you’re attempting to access is hiding dangerous content
  • Parental controls, to allow admins to block access to specific websites or keywords

Mail Service

When you sign up to a BT broadband package, you immediately get the option to set up a BT mail account. This gives you access to a personal address ending in @btinternet.com that you can access anywhere in the world, up to 10 additional email accounts for friends and family, and advanced antispam and antivirus email security.

Cloud Storage

All BT broadband deals come with free cloud storage as standard, which enables you to store documents and photos safely on the cloud, and access them from anywhere. Most packages come with 200GB cloud storage, with more advanced packages giving you 1TB. There’s also the option to add additional BT cloud storage for small monthly payments of £3 (50GB) or £9 (500GB).

BT broadband deals for existing customers

If you’re currently a BT customer but your contract is coming to an end, or it’s ended already, then you should be looking for a new package, either with a new provider or with BT themselves. This is because once your contract finishes, you’ll be placed onto out-of-contract rates, which can be as much as 33% more expensive than what you’re paying now.

When searching for a broadband deal with usave, both existing customers and new customers should be offered the same packages from BT. However, existing BT customers could find exclusive deals by logging in to their online account via their BT ID, and seeing what’s on offer.

Frequently asked questions about BT Broadband:

Is BT Sport free with BT Broadband?

Not really. New and existing BT Broadband customers can use the BT Sport app for free for the first three months, after which it will cost £10 per month. Sadly the app is not compatible with your TV, and you’ll need to purchase the BT Sport pack with your TV provider.

Do I need a landline for BT broadband?

Not anymore. All BT Broadband products come with the option of coming without a landline, or with a landline for £5 more per month.

Is there a limit on how much I can download?

No. BT does not limit users on their download or streaming habits. The only thing that will be affected I the speed, depending on which type of broadband you opt for.

Do I have to tell my old provider I’m switching to BT?

If you’re currently with another provider on the Openreach network (basically everyone except for Virgin and Hyperoptic), then BT will actually contact your old provider on your behalf. Otherwise, yes you’ll have to reach out and let them know you’re switching.

Does BT offer any free gifts with their broadband packages?

Yes. While you won't get a free gift with every BT broadband package, the provider has been known to regularly offer incentives such as a BT Reward Card with a selection of its deals. This card can be used online and in most high street stores that accept Mastercard, and they are typically pre-loaded with between £60 and £150.

Do BT have any Black Friday deals this year?

Yes, they will!
