Can you use your no claims bonus on more than one car?

Building up a no-claims bonus is one of the most effective ways of saving money on your car insurance. But many families nowadays have multiple cars, so is it possible to use your no-claims discount on more than one vehicle?

Typically insurers don’t permit a no claims bonus to be applied to more than one car. This is because a no-claims discount isn’t associated with you as a driver so much as a single vehicle. You can transfer it between cars but usually not apply it to multiple cars simultaneously. Even vehicles covered by multi-car insurance policies generally have separate no claims records and discounts.

But a few car insurance companies offer a workaround called mirroring. This can apply a no claims bonus to two cars with the same primary driver covered by a multi-car policy.

Axa, Budget, Dial Direct, and Swiftcover are among the insurers that permit mirroring of no claims bonuses but only at their discretion and to certain customers. Usually, you’ll need to be over a certain age and have no recent claims to mirror a no claims bonus from one car to another. You can also mirror to just one other vehicle.

But mirroring comes with risks. As the no claims records for the vehicles are merged, if you make a claim for one car, the entire no claims bonus applied to both cars will be reduced or wiped.
