Why it is important to get your car serviced regularly
While it’s not a legal obligation, unlike an MOT, to get your car serviced every year, it’s extremely advisable that you do so. This is especially true if you drive a lot of miles or you have a car that’s over 10 years old.
Getting your car serviced will give you peace of mind that everything inside your vehicle, from your engine to your brakes and suspension, is all working smoothly. Failing to regularly service your car could lead to internal damage that could not only shorten the lifespan of your vehicle, but cause a potentially hazardous situation if it were to break down whilst on the motorway, for example.
A less reliable car with broken parts is more likely to be involved in an accident, which would also shoot up your future car insurance premiums should you make a claim. It’s better to be on the safe side and take your car for regular servicing.
What is involved in a car service?
Unlike an MOT, which is set out and regulated by the DVLA, car servicing will vary depending on the garage you go to, as well as the type of car you’ve got. You will also be asked if you want an interim service, a full service, or a major service, with each offering an extra layer of inspection.
Interim service
In general, an interim car service will involve:
- Engine oil and filter checks and replacement
- Checks to lights, tyres, bodywork, and exhaust pipes
- Brakes, steering, and suspension checks
- Car fluid and coolant level checks
Full service
A full service will typically include everything an interim service will, plus:
- Air cleaner replacement

A car service is a standard, regular check-up of your vehicle that should be done at least once a year. There are three types of car service – an interim service, a full service, and a major service – with all carrying out essential checks of your car’s components, the latter being the most comprehensive check-up.
Your regular car service should not be confused with your MOT, which legally needs to be taken every year. While an MOT carries out vital checks of your car’s roadworthiness, including your tyres, brakes, and windscreen, a car service will be much more thorough.
Again, this will depend on the garage you go to and the condition of your vehicle, but in general:
- An interim service should take around 1.5 hours
- A full service should take around 3 hours
- A major car service can take up to 4 hours
If your car is found to be faulty and in need of extra repairs, then bear in mind that this process could take even longer.
Unlike an MOT, there is no legally-defined amount of time you’re allowed between car services. This will also depend on which type of service you get. But to make sure your vehicle is in tip-top condition, we recommend that you:
- Get an interim service once every 6 months, or every 6,000 miles.
- Get a full service once a year, or every 12,000 miles.
- Get a major service once every two years, or every 24,000 miles.
Once again, this boils down to what type of service you go for, which garage you go to, and how many extra repairs your car might need.
