Types of Business Electricity Contract

Almost all of the UK's domestic electricity suppliers offer business electricity tariffs. This means you'll have a lot of options to choose between. To make things easier, you should have a think about what type of tariff you want:

Fixed Rate Tariffs

Fixed Rate Tariffs

Fixed rate tariffs will lock in a certain price for your electricity for the duration of the contract. Importantly it's the unit price (that's the rate per kWh) that will stay fixed, not your monthly bill - but this still helps keep your costs steady and predictable. Rates can be fixed for up to 5 years in some cases.

Flexible/Variable Rate Tariffs

Flexible/Variable Rate Tariffs

With flexible tariffs, the unit price for your electricity will be subject to change dependent on the market price at the time. This means that your costs could go down during the course of your tariff, but they could also go up. One key benefit of flexible tariffs is that they can be cancelled with 30 days' notice.

Business Electricity Prices: What makes up the cost of your tariff?

The price you'll pay for your business electricity supply is made up of three components:

Price per kWh (Unit Price)

The basic cost of any tariff is the unit price. Quite simply, this is how much you'll pay for a single unit of electricity, which is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh).

Standing Charge

The standing charge is a flat fee that you pay for your electricity supply, usually charged on a daily basis. It tends to be a nominal fee, and some contracts wont charge one at all.

Climate Change Levy (CCL)

The CCL is an environmental tax that business pay based on the energy they use. More energy efficient businesses will pay a smaller CCL.
