Broadband Deals for Shared Houses

Shared House Broadband

Choosing broadband for your shared house can be daunting, especially with so many deals to choose from. Running a broadband comparison can make this easier, but you need to know what you’re looking for first.

It is best to have an open conversation before signing up to a broadband package. You’ll want to discuss your internet habits, and how much you’re willing to spend on getting a good connection. This will help you determine the best broadband deals for your house.

What is the best house-share broadband?

The type of broadband you need will depend on how many people are in your house, and what you use the internet for.

A standard ADSL package might be fine for two people, but in a house of three or more you probably want to look at fibre optic instead. Especially if you all use the internet at the same time.

If you want to use your broadband to stream Netflix, or for online gaming, you’ll need to make sure your broadband can support this.

Make sure you compare speed, data limits and cost when choosing a broadband deal for your house-share.

Do you need unlimited broadband for a house-share?

You probably want to avoid data limits in your house-share. Data caps might keep the costs low, but the more people in your home, the more data you’ll be using. You don’t want to run into additional fees!

The cost of exceeding your data limit can be very expensive, so it is best to find an unlimited broadband deal. The cheapest broadband deals on the market might be attractive, but remember you’ll be splitting the cost so a more expensive unlimited deal can still be affordable.

How fast does my broadband need to be?

Your broadband will need to be fast enough to cope with multiple users. The more people using the internet at once, the higher your broadband speed needs to be.

The speed you need will depend on what your house uses the internet for. If you mostly use the internet to check emails and browse Twitter, you can probably get away with a slower and cheaper broadband package. However, more regular internet use and online streaming will require a faster broadband package for your shared house.

How to Set Up Broadband for my Shared Accommodation

Be aware that you might need to set up broadband in your house share. This might mean someone needs to be home during the day.

If your new home has never had broadband, or you are switching between BT Openreach and Virgin Media, you will need to have a line installed. If you are renting your home, make sure you get permission from your landlord before arranging line installation.

Whether you are having a new line installed, or just switching provider, make sure you plan in advance. There is often a wait and you don’t want to be caught without internet.

How to Save Money on Shared House Broadband

The easiest way to save money is to compare broadband before choosing a deal. When running a comparison, there are a few things to watch out for.

Make sure you choose the right length of contract. If you know you will only be in your house for 9 months of the year, choose a shorter contract.

Work out the cost of the entire deal. Providers tend to offer incentives for longer contracts, and sometimes they work out cheaper. Look at the cost over the entire term, rather than just using monthly payments to help you decide.

It may sound silly, but paying for line rental can save you money. Don’t rule out a deal just because it means you need a landline.

Comparing broadband will show you the best broadband deals available.
