Best broadband in my area

Choosing the right broadband deal where you live is a matter of working out how you use the internet at home. If you've got a large household, or if you play games online or stream films and TV, you'll almost certainly want a decent fibre connection.

However, fibre (especially the very fastest full-fibre connections) isn't available everywhere; internet availability will be much different in the London area to what is available in the Northern Ireland area, for instance

To find out which are the best broadband deals available in your area, you'll need to enter your postcode in the box above.

What is fastest type of broadband in my area?

At present, fibre optic connections give the fastest possible broadband speeds, which is great for achieving smooth streaming and gaming experiences.

Getting the fastest broadband in your area depends mainly on availability. For most areas across the UK, Virgin Media’s 500Mbps package is the fastest. However, some providers do have faster options, albeit with less availability.

For most users a connection of 50Mbps to 100Mbps is more than enough if you just want to do a bit of light streaming and there aren’t too many devices connected simultaneously in your household.

Who is the best broadband provider in my area?

The only way to be sure which broadband providers are available in your area is to run a broadband comparison by entering your postcode in the box at the top of this page.

Not all broadband providers are available all over the country, but here's a rundown of some of the most popular companies and why people choose them:

  • Virgin Media is often the best provider in a given area for speed. They have the fastest widely-available service in the UK
  • TalkTalk is the most popular provider in the UK. They have good incentives and low prices
  • BT is one of the best providers for those looking for free gifts e.g. reward cards and vouchers
  • Plusnet is the one of the best providers based solely on price. They have the UK’s cheapest standard and fibre deals
  • Sky is the one of the best providers for combined broadband and TV packages

How can I get the cheapest broadband in my area?

Fibre broadband connections are definitely the fastest, but they tend to be more on the expensive side.

If you’re looking to save money on your broadband package, opting for a standard ADSL connection can be a much cheaper option in your area.

Of course, the speeds you’ll get will be considerably slower than the speeds you'll get on fibre connections. 'Cheapest' doesn't always mean 'best value'. But if you’re just a light user who browses social media and checks email, rather than streaming video or downloading movies, then the slower speed shouldn’t bother you too much.

What affects broadband speed in my area?

There are several factors that can affect the speed of your broadband internet connection:

With ADSL broadband, the distance between your house and the nearest exchange can be a huge factor in the speeds you experience, as copper wires aren’t the most efficient way to transfer data if you’re looking for maximum speed. Distance is also a factor for fibre optic connections, but to a much lesser extent.

Some internet service providers throttle speeds at peak times (e.g. evenings and/or weekends) so that the increased demand on the network doesn’t leave some users worse off than others. If this is a concern for you, then you’ll want to opt for a ‘truly unlimited’ broadband package that doesn’t restrict you in any way.

Other factors that affect your broadband speed include the connections within your home itself. Wireless wi-fi routers don’t provide speeds as fast as those connected directly by a cable (e.g. ethernet), and other electrical devices inside your home can also interfere with your wireless signal causing it to slow down.

Can I get fibre broadband in my area?

Currently, 97% of UK households can get what the government describes as 'superfast' broadband - which is anything above 24Mbps. While this is technically fibre, it's not full fibre, and isn't exactly a breakneck speed. Ultrafast broadband (>100Mbps) is available to 67% of UK households.

The two main fibre networks in the UK are Openreach (previously owned by BT), and Virgin's proprietary cable network. To find out if fibre broadband is available in your area, you'll need to enter your postcode in our comparison tool.
